I'm very concious that I live in a world of plenty and that hunger is never an issue for me or my family or indeed for the many thousands of people who have visited this site. We are extremely lucky, we have a passion for food, we have access to the best ingredients, recipes and chefs, and we could not imagine a world different to our own.
Yet around the world more than 1.4 billion people live in extreme poverty. There's an official definition of extreme poverty which is living on less than US$1.25 a day. Can you imagine that? Day in day out with little or no prospect of an improvement in your financial circumstances at a time when for many food is getting more expensive either through scarcity, corruption or economic mis-management.
That's where Living below the line comes in. For 5 days I will live on £1 a day. I'll write about it, let you know what I'm eating and how I'm feeling. Through this I am hoping to raise awareness of the issue of extreme poverty, and raise funds to help Restless Development continue their excellent work in Sub Saharar Africa and South Asia.
Live Below the Line is an initiative of the Global Poverty Project, an education and campaigning organisation whose mission is to increase the number and effectiveness of people taking action against extreme poverty.
In 2012, Live Below the Line is running in the UK, Australia and the USA simultaneously, with more than 20,000 people spending 5 days living below the line.
Across three continents people will join the movement to tackle extreme poverty - join me!
